Required Courses for the Labor Studies Certificate Program

LST 101: Introduction to Labor Studies

This course lays the foundation for any future study in this field by examining the basic theories behind the practice of labor relations in the US.


LST/HST 209: History of Labor in the United States

This course reviews the major developments in US labor history from the colonial times to the present.


LST 250: Problems in Labor Studies

Topics to be studied will be drawn from the
following areas:minorities in the labor movement: the role of women, Latinos, African-Americans, Asian-Americans and Native Americans in the development of the US labor movement. This course will serve as the diversity requirement for the certificate program.


LST 350: Issues in Labor Studies

Exploration of contemporary issues facing labor. Example of possible topics include technology and labor; jobs and the global economy; occupational safety and health and the law.


LST 450: Seminar in Labor Studies

Research Methods in Labor Studies. Students will do a research project on a labor topic of their choosing. They will have access to the UMass Dartmouth library and other union -related locations where they will conduct their research. In this course they will also learn research methods and presentation skills.


LST 451/MGT 452: Human Resource Law

An introduction to the major areas of labor law, including hiring, affirmative action, performance appraisal and discrimination in the workplace.
Students will be able to chose electives (6 credits) from the existing courses in the Labor Studies Minor program.
